Tread caps or full tread replacement
| Tread caps | Full replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | Old tread nosing is cut back and a finished cap goes over it | Old tread is removed and a new tread installed |
| Step height | Adds thickness, which must be planned evenly | Easier to keep original heights |
| Good fit when | Existing treads are sound | Treads are damaged or a clean profile is wanted |
Matching an existing finish
Wood color depends on species, age, light exposure and finish. A stain that looks right on a sample board may look different on your stair. Ask for test samples on the actual wood, viewed in your stairwell light. Even then, an exact match is not guaranteed.
Hardwood and runners
Some homeowners add a runner over new hardwood treads for softness or noise. That is a design decision. Discuss attachment method with the contractor so it does not damage the new finish.
Questions
Will my stair match my floors exactly?
Not guaranteed. Samples on your stair are the best way to get close.
Can engineered flooring be used on stairs?
Some products offer matching stair parts. Ask the contractor what they install and how nosings are handled.
