What Affects the Cost of a Staircase Renovation

Why we do not publish prices
Staircases vary a lot, and hidden conditions under carpet or old finish change the work. Any number we posted would be a guess. Contractors quote after seeing your stair.
Main factors
- Number of steps, landings and flights
- Stair shape: straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, winding, curved or spiral
- Open or closed sides
- Refinishing existing wood versus new treads
- Wood species and finish system
- Number of balusters and length of handrail
- Removing old paint, glue or carpet hardware
- Repairs found once surfaces are opened
- Whether the home is occupied and the stair must stay usable
Questions
Why do two estimates differ?
Contractors may plan different methods, materials or finish systems. Ask each to list scope and exclusions so you can compare.
