Stair Repair
Overview
Repairs target one problem instead of updating the whole stair. Common requests include squeaks, a loose tread, a chipped nosing or a baluster that rattles.
Some problems are cosmetic. Others, such as movement in a newel or stringer, need an in-person assessment before anyone can say what the fix is.

Material and condition considerations
Where the noise comes from
A squeak can come from the tread, the riser joint or the framing. Access from below, if available, changes the repair approach.
Cosmetic versus structural
Surface damage is cosmetic. Movement, sagging or separation is structural and should be assessed in person.

What affects the price
We do not publish prices, because conditions vary and many are hidden until the stair is opened up. These factors move an estimate:
- Number and type of problems
- Access from underneath
- Matching existing finish
- Whether parts must be ordered
How the estimate and referral work
You send one request. We check the property address against launch coverage, then share the request with a relevant independent contractor. The contractor contacts you, usually looks at the stair in person, and gives you their own estimate. Any agreement is between you and the contractor.
How to prepare
- List each problem with its location
- Record a short video of squeaks or movement
- Note if the underside of the stair is open, finished or a closet

Is it worth repairing instead of remodeling?
If the stair works well and you like how it looks, targeted repair is often the simpler path.
Can squeaks be fixed from above?
Sometimes. The best method depends on construction and access.
