Stair Tread and Riser Replacement

Treads take the wear. When they are cracked, cupped, deeply gouged or sanded too thin, replacement can make more sense than another refinish. Also called: new stair treads, riser replacement, stair tread installation.

Overview

Treads take the wear. When they are cracked, cupped, deeply gouged or sanded too thin, replacement can make more sense than another refinish.

Risers are often replaced at the same time, especially when switching from stained to painted, or when old risers are split or stained.

By service area

What stair tread and riser replacement usually includes

  • Removing and replacing treads, individually or as a set
  • Replacing or refacing risers
  • Matching nosing profile and overhang
  • Finishing new treads to coordinate with existing ones

Usually not included

  • Stringer or framing replacement
  • Full redesign of the railing, unless added

Material and condition considerations

Refinish or replace?

Refinishing works when treads are solid and thick enough to sand. Replacement fits when wood is cracked, loose, or sanded down near tongue or fasteners.

Matching an existing finish

Replacing a few treads means blending new wood with aged wood. Exact matches are not guaranteed, because wood color changes with age and light.

Fasteners and squeaks

Replacement is a chance to fasten treads properly. A squeak coming from framing may still need a separate repair.

Design preferences versus structural questions

Your design choices

  • Species and stain
  • Nosing profile
  • Riser color

Needs in-person assessment

  • Treads that flex underfoot
  • Cracks through the full thickness
  • Separation from stringers

We do not give structural or code advice. The contractor, or another qualified professional, assesses these on site.

What affects the price

We do not publish prices, because conditions vary and many are hidden until the stair is opened up. These factors move an estimate:

  • Number of treads and risers
  • Partial or full set
  • Wood species and thickness
  • Finish matching effort
  • Removing and resetting balusters

How the estimate and referral work

You send one request. We check the property address against launch coverage, then share the request with a relevant independent contractor. The contractor contacts you, usually looks at the stair in person, and gives you their own estimate. Any agreement is between you and the contractor.

How to prepare

  • Mark the treads you want replaced and photograph them
  • Note any squeaks and where you stand when you hear them
  • Share photos of the existing finish in daylight

Questions

Can I replace just a few treads?

Yes, but blending new and old finish is harder than replacing a full set. Ask the contractor how they handle matching.

Do I need new risers too?

Not always. Risers are replaced when damaged or when the design changes.
